About Sport Management

Sport Management offers several opportunities for the athletic minded student. The major of Sport Management is ideal for the student that wants to be involved with sports in a business capacity. Possible career types range from sales to management to creative to marketing. We often take the business of sports for granted as the game itself overshadows the background... and that's the point! Games aside, sports is an undeniably huge business providing several opportunities within it.

Sports Agents
Simply put, agents promote clients. If you have seen the movie "Jerry Maguire", you are familiar with this concept. The amount of work agents and business managers do for their clients varies. Some agents represent clients only when clients need them. For example, they may advise clients when they sign contracts. Other agents may handle all parts of a client's career for many years. Agents try to improve the performance of their clients. They may hire or recommend trainers or coaches who will work with clients.

Professional scouts
evaluate the skills of both amateur and professional athletes to determine talent and potential. As a sports intelligence agent, the scout’s primary duty is to seek out top athletic candidates for the team he or she represents, ultimately contributing to team success. At the professional level, scouts typically work for scouting organizations, or as freelance scouts. In locating new talent, scouts perform their work in secrecy so as to not “tip off” their opponents about their interest in certain players. At the college level, the head scout is often an assistant coach, although freelance scouts may aid colleges by providing reports about exceptional players to coaches. Scouts at this level seek talented high school athletes by reading newspapers, contacting high school coaches and alumni, attending high school games, and studying videotapes of prospects’ performances. A key in this field is the ability to know true talent when you see it.

The Practices of Management
Management skills can be applied to almost any field. In the sports world, there is a very demanding market for these types of experienced professionals. Most advertising, marketing, promotions, public relations, and sales management positions in sports are filled by promoting experienced staff or related professional personnel. For example, many managers are former sales representatives, purchasing agents, buyers, or product, advertising, promotions, or public relations specialists. In small firms, where the number of positions is limited, advancement to a management position usually comes slowly. In large firms, promotion may occur more quickly. If you are good at what you do take a fair and healthy management approach, you are sure to succeed in this industry.

Earning Potential
The middle half of coaches and scouts earned between $17,890 and $42,250. The lowest-paid 10 percent earned less than $13,370. The highest-paid 10 percent earned more than $60,230.
