Degrees Offered: NA

Requirements: When do you admit new students?

The Department of Theater admits new undergraduate students once each year in the Fall Quarter only.

When must I apply? Applicants must apply one year in advance during the month of November. No late applications are accepted.

What are the admission requirements?

Applicants are accepted at both the freshman and junior levels. Applicants must meet the University of California's minimum freshman or transfer admission requirements. See www.admissions.ucla.edu/infoprospective.htm for more information.

Transfer applicants should complete the general education (GE) requirements of the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television; or the GE requirements while a student at another UC campus; or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) at a California community college prior to entry. Transfer applicants should also attempt to complete the Preparation for the Major courses or their equivalent prior to admission.

What kind of application materials must I submit?

All applicants must submit the UC Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships to the University of California, and the additional required supporting materials directly to the Department of Theater.

What kind of supporting materials are required?

The supporting materials consist of: 1) A completed questionnaire 2) Unofficial college transcripts (transfer students only) 3) Two letters of recommendation, preferably from individuals familiar with your work in theater 4) A resume of theater training and experience 5) A personal essay which describes your academic, artistic, and professional goals 6) An audition and/or interview with a member of the Theater faculty.

You may also submit supporting materials in one or more of the following areas:

Acting. Perform two monologues?one contemporary, one classical?not more than one-and-a-half minutes each.

Musical Theater. Perform dance steps under the direction of a choreographer and sing two songs, a ballad and an up-tempo number; an accompanist will be provided; please bring sheet music in the key you intend to sing in.

Directing. Be prepared to discuss your directorial approach to a play you have selected.

Playwriting. Submit samples of creative writing, which may include scenes or complete plays.

Design. Submit an essay of not more than five pages on your design approach to any play by any one of the following authors: Moliere, Chekhov, O?Neill, Williams, Beckett, or Shepard; and present samples of your design, drafting, drawing, or other art work at the interview.

Except for large design exhibits, which should be brought to the interview, all written supporting materials must be submitted directly to the Department of Theater. All supporting materials sent to the Department become the property of the Department and University and will not be returned.

What else do I need to know about the audition/interview process?

Auditions and interviews are typically held in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York City in late January and early February. Applicants may audition/interview in acting and also musical theater. Students whose primary interest is in directing, playwriting, or design do not have to audition, only complete an interview. Applicants auditioning should wear loose, comfortable clothing. Props are not allowed. Videotapes are not accepted in lieu of the audition/interview.

If admitted, will I be placed in a specialization such as musical theater, acting, design, etc?

Theater students are not admitted into a specialization. Students may begin taking a sequence of courses in a particular area of interest in the sophomore year. Course listings for each of these program options are available on the School?s web site. Admission to most courses is by audition and/or interview. Students must successfully pass all courses in a sequence in order to continue taking courses in that area. Freshmen audition for admission to the Ray Bolger Musical Theater Program course sequence at the end of the first year. Junior transfer applicants from other schools may be admitted directly to that program if they pass the musical theater audition.

Who reviews my application and supporting materials?

A committee of Theater faculty members reviews all application materials and the results of the audition/interview. Applicants recommended for admission by the committee are reviewed for UC eligibility and formally admitted by UCLA?s Undergraduate Admissions Office.

How do I obtain an application?

The UC Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships is available beginning in September. Applicants should apply on-line or download and print a paper application at www.ucop.edu/pathways. The university no longer mails out paper applications except in rare circumstances. California residents may obtain a paper application at any UC campus admissions office or from the counseling office of any California high school or community college.

Detailed instructions and the required forms for submitting the required supporting materials to the department can be downloaded and printed at www.tft.ucla.edu.

When is the application deadline?

The filing/postmark deadline for submitting the UC undergraduate application is November 30. The deadline for receipt of the required supporting materials in the Department of Theater is usually the third Friday in January.

When are applicants notified?

Due to the amount of time needed to review the large number of applications, application decisions are normally not available until April. Admission decisions are no longer sent by mail. Applicants can check their admission status at www.admissions.ucla.edu/infoprospective.htm. Admitted students will receive additional information from the department. Please do not call the department to check on the status of your application, as we cannot give out information by telephone.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater provides a liberal education and pre-professional training in a comprehensive program that combines the study of the arts, humanities and sciences with exploration of the principle areas of theater practice. The program is designed to insure that students graduate with a sound humanistic and experiential base for further pursuits in education and in life beyond the university.

The comprehensive program in theater provides a liberal education by combining critical study of theater with experiential practice in one or more of its component parts. Students explore acting, design, directing, playwriting and production to build a foundation for future creative work. At the upper division level, students choose from an array of advanced elective courses allowing them to specialize in acting, design and production, directing, musical theater, playwriting, and theater history and drama, leading to a culminating research or creative project in the senior year.
