 An ideal program for the artistic, creative, inventive student, Industrial Design at Pratt provides a problem-solving methodology based on a heightened awareness of human activities, human perception, and the role these play in defining our culture through the forms and products of our daily lives. Design projects and problems represent the rich texture of Pratt?s New York City location. Issues include social responsibility, universal accessibility, marketing, production, cultural heritage, and aesthetic content.
Pratt Institute is noted worldwide for its program in industrial design, established in 1934 by the designer and teacher Donald Dohner, aided by the drive and energy of two fellow teachers from Carnegie Tech, Alexander Kostellow and his wife, Rowena Reed Kostellow. The program?s objective, Alexander Kostellow later said, was to ?supply students with an organized approach to the mechanics of design, to develop an understanding of the elements of design, of structure, of the organizational forces which control them, and an ability to apply this knowledge to a variety of situations in design designing for self-expression or for industry.?

Industrial design alumni are artists, craftsmen, educators, entrepreneurs, and corporate leaders. They have designed cars (56 classic Thunderbird and the Corvette C5), household appliances (Cuisinart and OXO Good Grips), office furniture for Knoll Inc. including the famous Pollock chair, and countless other beautiful and functional items that make life easier and aesthetically interesting.
This diversity comes from a program of study that allows freedom of choice and specialization. Six studio paths are offered to students:

Entrance is only available in the fall semester. Required documents include the following listed as well as a letter of recommendation and SAT I or ACT scores.
Application: Apply online at www.pratt.edu/admiss/apply and submit your $40 application fee by check or credit card online. International students pay $90.
Official high school or college transcript: Student copies will be accepted for the admissions decision, but the official final transcript must be sent as soon as it is available. Transfer applicants must submit a copy of their college transcript and their high school...
