The University of Nebraska Lincoln is the flagship campus of the University of Nebraska system, which serves as the land grant and comprehensive public university for the state. Through its three primary missions of teaching, research and service, UNL is the state's primary intellectual center, providing leadership throughout the state through quality education and the generation of new knowledge. UNL's graduates, faculty and staff are major contributors to the economic and cultural development of the state. U.S. News and World Report named UNL a Top 50 Public University. UNL also belongs to the Carnegie Foundation Doctoral/Research Universities-Extensive Association of American Universities (AAU).
Approximately 22,000 students attend UNL. Many students live on campus in one of 16 traditional or apartment-style residence halls. Off-campus housing is abundant as well. Lincoln, pop. 225,000, is Nebraska's capital city and features restaurants, nightlife and cultural opportunities within walking distance of campus.
Several engineering programs are offered on the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus. These programs include architectural, civil, computer & electronics and construction engineering. Omaha is located 60 miles east of Lincoln and is Nebraska's largest metropolitan city with a population of 500,000. UNO is primarily a commuter campus, but offers two housing facilities near The Peter Kiewit Institute is where many engineering classes are held.
